The Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, located in Bishkek, has a rich history that dates back to 1939 when it was established as the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute. It was founded with the aim of developing a strong healthcare education system in Kyrgyzstan and to train qualified medical professionals for the region.
During the Soviet era, the institute played a vital role in producing skilled doctors, researchers, and healthcare specialists, contributing significantly to the medical infrastructure of Central Asia. Over the decades, it expanded its academic programs, research capabilities, and clinical training facilities, becoming one of the leading medical institutions in the region.
After Kyrgyzstan gained independence in 1991, the institute underwent major reforms to align with international education standards. It was later renamed Kyrgyz State Medical Academy in honor of I.K. Akhunbaev, a prominent scientist and academician, recognizing his contributions to medical science and education.
